Following its three-way collaboration with READYMADE and F.C. Real Bristol, Medicom Toy has returned with its latest collectible – a glossy red version of a traditional Japanese daruma.
Often red, round and hollow, a daruma is a Japanese doll used as a talisman for good luck, considered a symbol for perseverance as one aims for his/her goals. Traditionally, daruma‘s are first sold with blank eyes, where the recipient paints in one eye as he/she sets the goal and fills in the other when it’s completed.
This daruma comes with one eye filled, perpetually keeping an eye on one’s goals. Its facial features see painterly details, etched with black eyebrows and a beard, while the mouth and nose are outlined in red. Below the head are two kanji characters “” emblazoned across the body, directly translating to “to pass,” mostly meant as encouragement for Japanese students working towards passing their school entrance exams. As finishing touches, subtle designs like the tiny sakura motif on the right ear and yellow tomoe‘s near the upper body round up the details of the shiny figure.
